To successfully swap LCI transmission to pre LCI car you have to swap also the CAS module and DDE/DME from LCI car. ZF 6HP28 cannot communicate with pre LCI CAS and pre LCI engine management. In my case I had to buy whole new 535d LCI engine because the 272hp and 286hp engines are pretty different and LCI DDE cannot work with my injectors, turbos and other sensors. So I had to rebuild and put back my old transmission. Finally I have 6 gears available

LCI Guys it is possible to retrofit the 6hp28 into a pre-lci model. I just found and talked to a guy that did it. He is a auto electronic geek and did two different retrofits on his 535d:
1st. E60/1 LCI non-sport - fully operational. You don't need any modules to make it work. Just need gearbox and complete gear lever module. Then it is just cutting and soldering wiring job. He said one day job. Just need to make sure that it came from a E60 LCI non-sport car.
2nd. E60/1/3/4 LCI sport - operational but with some issues - still to be finished. Gears stuck at redline under wot and gear up at 6th at very lows rpms while cruising. The diference for the non-sport is very noticeble with faster gears change and imediate TC lock. Besides the need of several LCI modules like gearbox, airbags, dsc... it is also need a major work of cutting and soldering wiring. He said one week job without the guarantee of being fully operational.

There should be no difference between normal and sport lever in replacing other modules. If the non-sport lever works with LCI transmission in pre-LCI car when you replace with sport lever it should work with the same modules. I have several suggestions what is wrong with the car that doesn't want to upshift at WOT and upshifts too early while cruising but I need some more info.
Tiago, I sent you message.
