My Ride: 2004 545i 6spd, blk on blk, HRE 540R 20x9 in front and 20x10 in rear with Pirelli PZero Neros 245/25/20 front and 295/25/20 rear. H&R springs, and Eisenmann quad exhaust, V! radar detector, black grille, limo tint all around.
Did anyone else here do the K&N drop in filter for their E60 (preferably the 545i)? Did you feel any difference in throttle response, quickness, anything at all? I just put the filter in and took my car for a ride and I don't think I felt much difference. Maye for a slight moment I thought I was accelerating quicker, but then again it could be my imagination (and it's night time so it's cooler than the day time).
Do you think the stock replacement filter will really mess up the MAF? I figured the replacement filter isn't like the CAI's so it wouldn't mess with the MAF?>

K&N panel filters are not as good as CAI, maybe it will give you 1 extra HP. CAI's are proven to increase hp and torque after you have calibrated both the ECU and MAF to work with it. Just my opinion in intake comparison learned from tuning my other cars.
The replacement filter may allow oil, from the filter, to foul the MAF. If I were to use a K&N, then I would throw it away when dirty and buy a new one because I don't trust myself to apply the right amount of oil. You won't feel a difference from a K&N, although you might pick up a very, very small amount of HP. There is no virtually free lunch when it comes to significant HP gains. Even expensive mods add only small gains. To notice a difference one would need to do several somewhat expensive mods. I could feel a difference consistently after doing the Dinan throttle body and a B&B exhaust. And, things felt even better after doing light wheels and tires.
Using a K&N might even affect your warranty--e.g., on the MAF. A filter can affect a warranty if the manufacturer supplies filters when needed--which applies to new BMWs. In other words, a K&N would not, in principle, affect a warranty given that filters are not provided routinely by the manufacturer.

I've been using a K&N drop in filter for the past year. I've always used K&N filters in all of my cars. I never had a fouled MAF. I do wash & re-oil them regularly.
On the other hand, I can't say that the Butt-dyno tells me that it's any faster. It gave a little more intake sucking sound (at least until I put the B&B on).
