Default It's headlight time AHL vs AFS

It seems to be time to replace the headlights, I have polished and sanded them a few times but as you know it does not last say maybe 3 to 6 months and I'm not sure if that will work again to my satisfaction. My car is a 04 built in Sept 03 and I have AHL bi xenon with adaptive, and yes they still work, but it took a lot of trial and error to get them working again. But my question is ebay has lots of good looking and oe new AFS units, I know the AFS ones have the adaptive built into the lcm and the AHL is under glove box separately. Can I substitute to the AFS bixenon actives, and use my light electronics and they work? In essence convert afs to ahl and they work or is it more than just electronics but hardware differences. I hope I asked correctly
