By "coding" it means you need to have BMW perform a software update.
Hey gary--how are you enjoying your ipod unit?

Sorry to go but you just made it sound like all BMWs that go into the dealership have anal probing done to them I, for one, think it was really funny (though, I fear, unintended).

As for the scantool - I'm not sure exactly which one it is that they use, but several shops around NY have the tools and the know-how to do the coding, but when I inquired as to how much it would be, I was actually quoted more than the dealership. Maybe my case is unique, but I'd definitely find out how much the dealer wants to perform this - if for no other reason, then just to compare.

GL and keep us posted
Hi THERUSSIAN,
If you live in this tiny island in the mediterranean, with one BMW dealership cum stealership you will immediately undertand.
BMW`s in MALTA cost roughly 4 times as much as you pay in USA. I may be off by a few bob
You hit it right on the head! Its next to anal probing or next to screwership if you understand what I mean.
I do not want to go off topic, but worth mentioning, my previous BMW (an E39) I had to dispose of it for a third of the price I bought it for after 20 months. During the time I had it, it spent over 3 months at their garage trying to find a rough idle problem. After coughing up about 10,000$ I was still the proud owner of a BMW with a rough idle engine problem!

JUST TO CLARIFY.

It seems that the coding the car needs is only to enable it to play mp3. Ipod or no ipod.

BMW would only fix it if your car is under warranty;- 50,000 miles or 4 years. I am out of it.
If I only knew this, I would just enabled the mp3 and left the changer. In my previous E39, had an alpine changer and it was great holding hundreds of mp3`s. I agree that an ipod is more versatile but this mess I found myself in, could have done without it.
I will post which way the thing goes. FYI, I have linked the service bullettin I unearthed.

I fully understand your concerns now that you mentioned the previous BMW, i am lucky with my local dealer as I have known the service and parts staff for nearly 15 years now. At the end of the day we are all human and mistakes can get made, though you spent a heck of alot of cash on that rough idle where I would have given up after ?2K. Everything you want to add to an E60 needs coded usually by the dealer, there is no escaping it im affraid.

I hope you get something sorted out, your other option if you dont like the only dealer on the island is to not buy another BMW. I personally wouldnt go without.

When i fitted my Ipod kit i had big concerns about how successful the software update would be, there is a member on here who had to replace a faulty control unit that only showed up after they started the update. It wasnt cheap either. My update was done in less than half a day, my software is now August 10 2006 instead of March 03 2004.

I have no regrets about my kit or the software update, having the ipod working through the idrive is really good. I am now saving up for a Gateway 500 so I can add the bluetooth module.

Do you still need the dealer to code the car for the Gateway unit to work as well?

From what i understand from this forum, I can fit a Gateway 500 and it will work because I currently have my car coded for the OEM Ipod adapter (ie changer and mp3 capability enabled). If I want to enable the bluetooth function then i will need the dealer to do this.
