If you have CD Changer already, then its plug and play.
As far coding, you can take car in for some warranty repair have them repogram car.. good excuse: Idrive is slow.

My E60 is an 11/2006 production. Do you think I'll need a recode? I-Drive is slow, but I can live with that. I'm more scared of a software update breaking something else.

Desperate to get this for my E60 with CD changer, any more info or part no or suggestions

Exactly, my 550 without Nav showed as you describe and my car with Nav shows as CD1..., etc.
