It's not a question of stupidity. It's not difficult, but if you have never played with a car's electrics, I can understand you being daunted by it.

Get a friend who has some experience to help you, or - at worst - purchase the parts and ask a garage (not BMW) to do the work. It took me less than an hour to do it, and I am not an electrical car specialist, but I have fitted a fair number of radios and alarms to cars in my life.
