Hi BT007. Congrats on your new ride. I installed the illuminated door sills recently. They work fine except that in the daytime, you'll have to try real hard to notice it. Also, there is a very slight delay of a couple seconds before they come on after the door is opened.
And yes the chrome grills look great on black. Looks a little like Darth Vader if you're standing at a slightly lower angle in front.

They shouldn't light up "sometimes".
I agree, in daylight it's not that obvious that they are illuminated, but it IS noticeable, if you know it.
When they are installed correctly, they light up with a short delay, ONLY if the engine is off! While the engine is running, they don't light up! I had my dealer change this, so they ALWAYS light up when the door is opened!

Would all dealers know how to do this (even in the US?)
The installation, yes.
The "power when door is open, even if engine runs", no. It took my dealer a while to figure out how to do it without confusing the car...
I'll have to tuck that away in my list of differences other than # of doors (still pretty slim, at least to 545). I suppose that is true for all 5er model years as well?
