I have a Thule Snowcat ski rack that attaches to the factory rails on my X5 - no wind deflector. I have gone 85-90 with skis and a snowboard on the rack. They produce a bit of wind noise at those speeds. How fast can you safely go with a ski rack? Thule responded to my email by saying it is completely safe to travel within any legal speed limit in the U.S. with the rack....Thanks.

Do any of the European members have some experience with this question? I likely wouldn't go over 110-115 with the rack regardless.

Regards,
DRP

Depends on the depth of the snow.

AFAIK you shouldn't drive any faster than 100 KM/h.
After about 200 Km's it has to be checked, since it can get lose a bit.

The faster you go, and the more wind there is, the faster it gets lose...

Just keep accelerating until u hear a thump and car screeching from behind you. Then you're going too fast.

That's our car with a ski rack on top of it !

We have been driving with this ski rack from Denmark to Austria, and back again with 3 pairs of skies attrached to it. The weather was good, and the traffic was light. At 160-170 km/h it was no problem at all driving with the ski rack on the car, but the wind noice was there for sure !

We reached 190-200 km/h a few times, but the wind noice was way to high.

I checked the ski rack at every stop, and the skies and the rack was stable as a rock.. This OEM BMW ski rack system is really nice, and made for driving the car at the speeds it's build for

Tried several times with a skibox a speed of 120 mph/180kmh with no problem on the German autobahn to Austria. Check every 2 hours the fittings. BTW only "problems" are low mpg and noise.
