Your bimmer will suffer - my e34 540i sport had dunlop winter sport m2's that were ok in the snow and all around were great tires even on dry, but man i still struggled, even with manually defeating the traction control to get better bite -

I'm waiting for my 530xi but as you can see I kept the Lexus SUV outdoors, and it was awesome in the snow.
I suspect that even with the xi without the right tires I'll have problems -

I love snow when I'm in Colorado skiing but here in New England - it just blows!!!!!!!!
Isn't it true that the E60's are better in the snow/rain than the last 5 and 5's before?

It was high 70's and low 80's (F) in Houston, Texas today, November 9, 2005. Humidity was like breathing underwater (high humidity). Snow? Maybe once in a blue moon (actually, thats every 2.5 years).

Are the tires on the 530xi sport package are all-season?

Montreal here..we know about snow...unless you go in the mountains the E60 handles well in winter in city driving. You definitely need 4 good winter tires though. Don't even think about all- seasons. I like Pilot Artic from Michelin myself. you maybe want to go with higher profile and narrower tires to be safe and have better traction. Even when it s dry winter tires perform better at low temperature..different rubber compound. With my E39 and E60 a total on 5 winters and it's fine..the traction system is great on this car. The only challenge is to be stopped in very thick snow with ice underneath in a steep slope ...then good luck trying to move!

Ya u know it's bad when you have to shovel out your own snow blower... that was so bad, I was shoveling for hours before I could even get that snow blower out, I don't know how I got to work.

I live in a hilly area on the north shore of Long Island and my 2001 E39 525i was dreadful in the snow. Even with all traction aids turned off it was barely able to move in anything more than a light dusting. With the all electronics turned on it was undriveable.

I expected to buy snow tires and an extra set of wheels for the E60 but I got through last winter, which had more than average snow, with no problems. My 2004 525i is great in the snow with the factory equipped Conti tires. I think that BMW has improved the traction control and DSC so it reacts better in the snow.

This is just my opinion,
my dad drove a rwd F-150 every winter in NE Ohio with no problems. His theory - It is the driver that is important - not the weather.
But if you get narrow tires (get the 17x7.5 rims), snow tires, and a few bags of salt or sand in the trunk you should be more than fine
But after all of this - I bought an xi - guess I just do not want to have to drive carefully?

OK I live in Boston and this will be my first winter with my BMW, w/out buying winter tires how does my car ride in the snow? My last car (03 Lincoln LS V8) wasn't that bad, car before that (98 Lexus GS400) was fair (not going to name every car but using those 2 as a model) we had an awfull winter in MA. last year and I was actualy able to drive my Lincoln in the worst snow that we got (had to go to work ) so what am I looking at this year with my Bema'

Attachment 12361
my lincoln before I dug it out to drive to work
Attachment 12362
My Snow Blower's view before I got to dig that out too'
Well, living myself close to the Northpole I would not worry.
Been driving BMW without ASC or DSC...

There are some days every winter when the only intelligent transportation is a snowmobile ,.
but otherwise you'll manage with your E60 just great,
but of course you need proper winter tires, see my signature!

Even with good winter tires one needs to remember, that the traction in the snow
and ice isn't the same as in the summertime
