I'm posting this item to see in there are other people with the same problem, and in case solved, how it is solved.
I've 530xdT build 01/07/2007. When I ordered the car I checked compatibility of universal remote control.
According to HomeLink (Johnsson Controls) it shouldn't be a problem because my port was supported since 06/2006 (version 7).
At the day of delivery, I couldn't get to work (allthough I'm practical with these items being engeneer).
After going to the garage they wouldn't believe me and told me that it was compatible but I was not able to program.
Than I phoned HomeLink again and told how to check version number. It seems to be version 6.
Back to the garage, the tell it's nothing to do with versions, and now they will send a technician. In case my error I would have to pay working hours, in case their error ....
They will sent someone on next Friday (23/3).
I don't think it is a good service of BMW telling is not their problem (they say it's a homelink problem). But I paid BMW and not HomeLink.

I can't say exactly what's wrong but I do know that many people, including engineering types, have trouble getting the Homelink to work. The process can be confusing, etc. and often the instructions aren't very clear.
In case you haven't searched the forums yet, here's a sample of some of the hits you get using the search term 'homelink':

As you can see, it's a pretty common issue.
If you're sure you've done everything right and it's still not working, why not try to program the opener at someone else's house just to see if it's working?
