My Ride: On Order for European Delivery 550i SilverGrey Sports, Winter, Prem Pkg, Prem sound, NAV, HUD, comfort seats
Default

Flying to Munich in 2 weeks for 550 pickup.

I received advice on winter tires for when it gets back here.

Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22 VR $222 each

The wheels he said were replica 5-series 10spoke (supposedly made by the folks who supply BMW) for $179 each

Comments on the tires? Price?

Thanks for your help

The Blizzak's suck.
They used to be the best subbless wintertyres, but not anymore!

What I would do is to buy Continental winter tyres and put them on your standard 17" wheels and then buy some nice 18" or 19" BMW wheels with non RF Michelin PS2 summer rubbers.

Try to trade out your RF's that comes with the car.

Do not save $$$ on the tires. Buy the best!
They are the only contact the car has to the street!

You can get Conti Contact TS810S in 245/40 VR18 for $199.00 at Tirerack.com and they have ASA JH3 wheels that are similar to the Styling 123 ones that will come standard on your car for $139.00 each.

IMHO I would get the 17" wheel & tire set for better traction & handling in ice & snow. You can get good offers from BMW at this time of the year for that 17" size set. The Styling 138 would be my pick.

Have fun on your Euro trip.

My advice to is to make the arrangement in USA. EURO is so strong and US$ prices are far better than EURO prices. As said before do not make savings on tyres.
I would recommend to try brand new Dunlop Winter Sport 3D. Try www.dunlop.de to see further details on this very tyre. Aslo Goodyear Ultra Grip 7. Dunlop should be a bit cheaper. Avoid Michelin. Too expensive and not delivering in show and ice. Pirelli Winter Sport 240 is aslo a good choice, but they do not last long.

I've used the Blizzak LM22s and thought they were excellent. But on TireRack the user ratings are even better for the Dunlops. Continentals are not rated.

I agree with Ricracing that it makes sense to buy good winter tires and put them on our 18" wheels that come on the 550, then buy some 19" wheels next spring with some excellent summer rubber.

That's what I plan to do.

I bot the sport pkg so I get the 19's with the car. 17's seem to make sense for the winter tho.

Thanks all for the comments. More the better

This is true. We get $1.20 for a Euro.

A couple of years ago we got $0.90 for a Euro.

Bless "W" and the U.S. deficit and the Iraki war.
