Default Help regarding roof liner replacement.

So I just picked up a complete set of black alcantara roof lining on Ebay, it came from an M5.

I've now googled for several hours and I keep finding dead ends with 404 links/pictures, are there no guides for this mod or should I just try my luck removing one piece at a time? At this point I'm just collecting whatever I can from any year 2000+ BMW guide and hope that some bits here and there also apply to the E60. I've found DIY's for other BMW's but none for the E60.

Any help or tips related to fitting will be appreciated, guessing someone here has done it before!

Default Headliner

I did this with my 5.

First remove front 2 pillars. Torx is hidden behind the airbag clip. Then middle 2 pillars. Move seats forward and pull out the lower parts first. (4 clips) then tops. You'll have to pull off the chair electronic plastic bezel to remove seat belt torx stew. (Size 50 I believe) rear pillars are like the front but have 2 pieces each. Remove sun visors rear overhead light bezels.

Open moon roof and you'll find about 12 small torque srews. The headliner is held up now by a few clips. To remove the sliding moon roof cover is a little harder. You'll have to drop the whole moon roof sliding track to reveal the small torx holding the slider. A little patients and you can do it. I did! Good luck

I have done headliner swaps on the E60 more than once. I recommend removing at least the front and rear seats, and to make it easier you can remove the steering wheel and center console also. Even then it is a challenge to get it in and out without bending/creasing the headliner. I have been able to get the headliner in and out thru the right rear door. The body seal for the right rear door should be removed also which gives you another inch of diagonal width the squeeze the headliner thru. For the sunroof slider you are actually supposed to take out the glass and then the slider comes out thru the top without removing the sunroof assembly. There are 3 screws on each side of the sunroof glass housing, 4 screws on the sliding shade, and a bunch of screws holding the headliner in from the top. I think BMW probably installs the headliner in the car before installing the windshield. As far as airbag errors and iDrive warnings I clear the computer after I finish the work. It can be also done without generating airbag warnings if you strategically get the front seat bolts out and move the seats into a removable position before disconnecting the battery and then unplugging the seats. The battery will have to be unplugged the whole time you have the seats and or steering wheel disconnected.

Hope this helps and I am sure the finished look and feel of the Alcantara will be worth all the effort.
-Michael

Thank you for nice information.
I am right now doing headliner swap on my E60 M5, however I found that it was hard to access several torx screws, especially rear section, on moonroof.

Do I need to remove moon roof glass before unscrew these torx?

Yes, please post pics if you have any! Im looking to do this as well. My headliner material appears to be fine, it's just the glue letting go. Has anybody pulled back the original headliner material and resprayed with glue?
