Hello,
I am looking at wheels for my 545i, sport package. I have a solidworks sketch model of my current setup (17x7.5" et 17 with 225/50R17 Eagle RS-A, non sport pack wheels) overlaid with a sketch of my proposed setup (20x9" et 20 with 255/30R20). I want the maximum width square setup possible, for reasons of tire rotation, traction, and rim protection.
I understand the M6 wheels will rub with the 255/40R19 tires, and a 245/35 needs to be fit to make them OK, however I also notice that the 255/40 is much larger in diameter than the 245/35, and I am not sure whether the greater problem is the diameter or width. My proposed 255/30R20's are the same diameter as stock but 10mm wider than the sport package tires or suggested front tires for M6 rims.
It appears than my fenders are already rolled, though this surprises me based on the first owner of the car's age. The fronts fender lips do not go in horizontal, they angle up at least 45 degrees from horizontal and are only ~6mm wide. Not sure if this is factory or not?
I figure I will have 1.8mm clearance between my proposed setup and the strut - damn close and would probably benefit from a 2mm spacer... however the outside edge sticks well past my current setup and the tire sidewall is much more vertical due to the low profile.
How flush am I able to go on the outside edge, such that I won't get rubbing? It appears to me that the tires will move out as the suspension compresses, then again I wonder how people with flush setups don't mangle their fenders if they hit a bump. How much suspension travel is there in the front?
Clif's notes:
Are the sport pack fenders 'factory rolled' to 45 degrees?
How flush am I able to go on the outside edge, such that I won't get rubbing? IE if a straightedge across the fender did not interfere with the tire will I be OK?
How much suspension travel is there in the front?
Thank you!

I should note I believe the strut actually angles up and inward slightly so that I may have 3-4mm clearance on the inside edge, its the outside edge I'm concerned about.

I am running 255's in the front but on 9.5 inch wheels. And am lowered quite a bit with coliovers. I haven't made and fender mods. There is slight rubbing when turning full lock into and elevated driveway. Other than that there are no issues. I would like to get the wider M5 fenders is I can add a 5mm spacer and I think that will eliminate the rub..

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me what the offset of your wheels is?
Turns out my fenders are not rolled, they come from the factory as I described.

245's on9 inch wheels 20mm offset in front. inner wheel just rubbed the strut collar on the coilover. so we had to raise it a few mm's. not much room for spacers either. maybe 3mm if im luckly. but that should push it away from the strut and allow the car to go back down more if i wanted to but i wont anyways.

Thanks guys. I have decided to buy 19's instead of 20's as I presume they will ride and handle better. just bought a set of 245/35R19's and am going to make up my mind on wheels in the next month or so.

Former Vendor
We recommend the E92 M3 wheels for the E60 fitment or the new F10 M5 wheel that a lot of our customers are buying.
We have those both available in 19s.
