Hi,
I need to get a new/recon gearbox for my 2004 530i (topic covering why here, https://5series.net/forums/topic/945...age__view__new).
I have a quote of £1400 + VAT from ENGEAR in Basildon to supply and fit a like for like box. I've heard that ZF boxes are a little 'complicated' but Engear guarantee they have the specialist knowledge to do it.
Question is: Does anyone have any experiences of ENGEAR that they can share with me? It is very difficult to find out just how reputable/competent they are.
I'm also trying Newbury Transmissions so any feedback on them would be equally welcome.
Many thanks,
Matt

Sorry if this thread about Engear has gone cold, but I must add my bit. I submitted a car for a recon gearbox, but suprise lots of other things had gone as well and the estimate was doubled. They took ages - absolutely ages, made excuses, fobbed me off and finally did the job when it suited them. Would I use them again? I think not!

They will keep your car for many weeks, mine was for ten weeks and the second time was for nearly sixteen. Eventually, when it suits them they will have a look at your car, find extra work that they had not quoted for and do the job. Mine went wrong again within a about four months. They do not like warranty work and surprise, they found an extra £400 that I had no choice, but to pay. I nearly ended up in the mental hospital because you are absolutely powerless.

Engear or who ever they ar this week took our car in August 2010 an as u said 7-10 day turn around- 2 year warranty free service after 6 months, they had our car till feb 2011 an then called th said was ready but was £400 extra, i asked for the new engine number to have DVLA change on log book- said they would call with it another 3 weeks of calling then in the end said had fixed my engine but still wanted £1200 plus extra £400 plus VAT told them no chance, they said would return car but with no engine- i said your nutts they keep saying was coming but as today JAN 2014 still have no car, had just had respray an facelift to 02-03 looking- car was crisp, they have made out people who dont work there anymore are responsible - but ive called an spoke to lee everytime i want a new engine- this year im going to get them what ever way-trading standard police but ive had it - the car was mint, they are worse then crooks-watch this space
