No, spacers do NOT solve the problem. You'd need the "opposite" of spacers, which is obviously impossible. Normal offset E60 wheels will stick out further - sometimes too far - on an xi.
The normal Style 135 wheels will "fit", but the fronts in particular will be sticking out too far. So, what you can do is get the Style 135 wheels intended for the xi:

Just take a look at TireRack website and they listed some 19" wheels available and suitable for the XI models. They claim that they have PHYSICALLY done measurement on each car models and make sure the wheels will fit. So...............

I have no problem putting 19" on my car. I think they are 38mm offsets all around. But I don't think we should go staggered on the XI model as per many expert suggested. The all wheel drive system will be scrolled up if you do that.

You can go up to 20" if you want to but with xi models you cannot go staggerd because its messes up the all wheels drive

I have the Style 166's on my xi which are staggered 19*8.5 in the front and 19*9.5 in the rear? Does that mean that I am screwing up the AWD by doing that? :'( Did not know that. Would have been nice of the dealer to mention it to me before I bought the wheels.

So does it means spacers would solve the problem?
What about the factory M-package style 135 rims from a regular e60? Can that be fitted on the Xi?

They are more flattened out than the regular 135 rims (which are more concave).
