So I was talking to my dad earlier and we were talking about GPS. And I was mentioning the member from NY who got his car stolen. I've seen the GPS tracking systems for cars to keep track of where kids go and you can track the movements on a computer. I'm wondering if anyone has installed a GPS tracking unit inside the car if the car were to ever be stolen? Any idea how much that would run? Does every car have the BMW assist feature also? I figure they have to use GPS to find your location so there must be a GPS module in my car somewhere even though I'm not actively subscribed to BMW assist.

Oh I haven't been on for a while!

I have Lojack in a couple of cars which does not use GPS to locate your car but fortunately have never had to use it. I believe BMW assist uses the onboard GPS however that has a few drawbacks. It needs a good GPS signal and needs power from the car battery. 3rd party systems need to include a battery backup for when the power is cut. I think Lojack is now offering a GPS type service to enable tracking of a vehicle for keeping track of your kids...spouse etc... There is also one out there called Zoombak which offers a Dog GPS...in addition to the car tracking one.

You would probably be looking at $200 + $10 per month service fee for any competitively priced service.

GPS can be used to track most anything, like my daughter in Middle School!

I have the BMW Tracking (?1100 when I ordered the car, so I think it is an extra device), but luckly never needed it.
?150/year the fee.

Edit: you can try a retrofit
