Does anyone have any methods of geting the brake dust off of rims. I have a 2006 and the front rims are forever filthy with brake dust. Unfortunately, there was a period of time that i did not clean my car regularly and it seems like the brake dust just "baked on" the rims. I've tried all over the counter brake dust rim cleaner and power washing the rims to no avail. Iwas going to try rubbing or polishing compound or a petroleum based type cleaner for cutting grease but did not do it for fear of damaging the rims. any input or suggestions on how to go about restoring them? Thx.

I had the same problem. The brake dust was kinda baked on and it looks like the lip of the rim was white. or oxidized
Got this stuff at kragens works pretty good but prepare to get down and rub the stuff off. took me about 5 hours to finish all 4 wheels
FYI it took like 3 cans to get the stuff all off

Even after cleaning you might find permanent "pits" where the brake dust has eaten the finish - only thing to fully restore them is professional refinishing.

Once you get them cleaned install these brake pads: http://www.zeckhausen.com/axxis_pads.htm. You will wonder how you lived without them.

Green Stuff Brake Pads all round.
I have them and they are very good for stopping the dust and for road use too.
Planning on getting new brake disk now.

With the womans Mini i use orange cleaner from 99 cent store along with cheap carwash soap you can get at kragen for like 3 bucks and do a lot of scrubbin then rinse then scrub then rinse then wipe with microfiber cloth. Im at the point right now it would be easier to take the rim off and wash it on that little car. But that Orange cleaner works wonders and they are like 24oz bottles!

Get some P21S Gel (not the regular formula). Apply to the wheels, letting it sit for up to two hours, as the directions say. Then rinse, using a soft brush and some soapy water (same as you'd use on the car), then scrub with the brush, then rinse again. If the stuff has really gotten into the finish some, repeat. If after two applications of the P21S Gel any pitted areas remain, get a claybar kit, and go to work on the dark spots. Remember that you should treat your wheels with the same care you'd give any other painted area of the car, so be as gentle as possible.

Following the cleanup, wax the wheels, then use Mequiar's Quick Detail whenever they look a little dirty. With regular (every five days or so) treatment of MQD, your wheels will look pretty fine, most of the time. If the extra work is too much, then it's time to think about switching pads.

+1 on the P21S gel. In fact I tried P21 just yesterday on two wheels and the BMW stuff on the other two wheels and P21 hands down. A good controlled experiment being the engineer that I am. Fred
