Fog lights won't work

Hi everyone!!!
I have a 2004 530i, just bought a pair of HID fog lights, when I connect them to the car they go on, and then suddenly off. The lights won't stay on. A friend of mine told me that there is not enough power and that's why for safety features they go off. He said I might need some kind of a relay to get them to work. Anyone had this kind of problem? Help please
