I have pushed too hard when plugging in my 12v compressor when inflating a soft tyre. Now the lighter socket just sits flat and loose, so doesn't glide up when opening the compartment
Presumably there's a coiled spring or spring bar type of arrangement underneath? Does anyone have an idea how to fix this or is it a case of removing the whole of the centre console
.....presumably this is a tricky job and not worth the hassle?!
Thanks.
Ian.

I have the exact same issue from doing the exact same thing the other week. BMW have said they'll sort it out for me for free whilst it's in with them having the spark plug change and vehicle inspection etc. See what your local dealer says. They may at least give you some insight into how to sort it if you don't succeed on here. GL!

Same thing happened to me not too long ago. I take it you have a pre facelift e60
Basically you'll have to remove the idrive knob, central trim, gearshift trim/ knob to get to the lighter spring mechanism. I suggest you do it when the parts dept is open as it may be a quick replacement of the coil spring that's needed. You may also be unlucky that something has snapped.
It's a b!tch trying to pry of the central trim. Unscrewing the asthray is also fiddly but the rest is straightforward.
Search the forum for detailed instructions and let us know how you get on.
Good luck

Thanks for the feedback. I'll search the forum to get an insight into how hard trim removal is, then if we get another sunny weekend in 2009 I'll look at having a go....
