Fix your trunk (boot) is opening too fast (part2) for 15US
Original thread: https://5series.net/forums/e60-discu...o-fast-120799/
BMW shock part number: Trunk shocks: 7141490 - 51247141490 For those that are interested - the strut is; Brand: STABILUS Model: STAB-O-SHOC Part Number:6255SA Original repair Russian website with Hyundai shock: https://www.drive2.ru/l/6233761/ I found an alternative to trying to find the STABILUS 6255SA. A Russian website said to use a Santa fee 2002: Hyundai 8717026011 tailgate shock. (the beauty is that you have to remove the end caps of the BMW shock and put them back into the Hyundai one) I bought one, tried it and it was better but the trunk lid still slapped at the end. Ok, so I realized that there wasn't enough force to hold it and I started to find the stats of all shocks with compatible stroke and length. I found the STRONGARM 4514 worked perfectly. Only drawback is that the end of the shock aren't threaded so you need to grab a M6x1 die and thread them yourself, really easy. Once this is done, you remove the spring from the old one (best solution is to pin down one end and have a helper hold the other end with a screw driver while you are pulling the shock off the fitting) Once you thread the old BMW end ring to the new shock, you only have to fight it to install the spring. A small adjustment to the left spring and the trunk now opens like new :-) http://bmwe34.net/Ebay/E60_1.jpg This is the picture of all 3 shocks, from left to right New Armstrong with the spring and end caps installed Hyundai Monroe replacement Original BMW one leaking and dead. http://bmwe34.net/Ebay/E60_2.jpg This is the spring setting on the left side so the trunk can open all the way and not 3/4 of the way up. Best thing is the cost of the repair: 15US and a bit of knuckle skin. |
Pls provide your source for STRONGARM 4514

Thx The toughest part is compressing the spring and removing it. I had one end of the shock pined down and a helper with a screwdriver on the other end holding the strut so it doesn't move. With gloves, I grabbed the spring and pulled it over the strut. Not easy the 1st time, much easier the second when I knew what to expect. |

cmyachtie, this is a cool addition to the fix. I would have done it if I had found the information.
I am lucky that my US mother company ships every week to our office in Canada so I can order from amazon.com |

Great work

I replaced the strut with strongarm but then the trunk only open half way up. If i lift it up myself then it still falls down halfway which is very inconvenient. Any idea to fix this?
