Here are my Tire Rack ASA 17x7.5 wheels with last year's Semperits 235 45x17 from my old 540iS mounted. They handle well.
Happy Thanksgiving snow, Ray Hull http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/DisplayWhee...=Silver+Painted I should mention that Semperit is now a Continental brand. I got these tires locally last year, cheap, for $128 each, and the ASA wheels coincidentally, were the same price, this year from Tire Rack. Tire pressure monitor recalibrated fine. FYI, The 17" Bayern 5s (designed especially for BMW, supposedly) from Discount Tire Direct did NOT fit this car's calipers and were returned. I did not want the 18" (same style shown here). http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/f...-120&vid=008605 Cheers, Ray Hull |
Go for 17". Dunlop M3 or the new model 3D (not yet offered in all sizes), they are high-performance winter tyre index H or V, if you get loads of snow (Finland or similar) get Nokian Rsi index up to 160 km/h but better on the icy stuff. NEVER EVEN CONSIDER RUNFLAT, they are the worst thing that happened to BMW after Bangle and Rover.

Did anyone with the asa's find that the rims bend easily? I have the Milli Miglia mm2's and I have bent every rim. (My summer stock rims are fine.)

Happy Thanksgiving snow, Ray Hull [/quote] Thanks, I'll enquire. I was just glad to get these wheels that fit after the other misfits. Ray Hull |

O.k.
Car will get here from ED in 3-4weeks. Snowing here in N.E. (near Boston) on Thanksgiving day. Want to finalize my decision. TireRack has the ASA JH3 rims which I see others on this board have. They look o.k. to me. The Dunlops look better to me than the Bridgestones Questions. 1) 17 inch vs 18 in rims? 2) if 17's, the Dunlops offer a winter Run Flat or standard. Which one and why? Thanks everyone. I want to put an end to this already (and start agoninzing over other minor matters  ) Cyclist |
thanks for all the replies,
given the last comment I am torn between 17's or 18's Not sure how much difference it will make in the Boston area! |

id say go for the 18"s with your 550i, they'll probably be better all around, as long as you use good snow tires there shouldnt be a problem and you'll have the better handling kept inline like orig...here's what im running, they are the recommended winter set-up by BMW for the M5 & M6....

I bought a set of Style 123 (18" 530i sport) wheels and tires from Forum member taking delivery of new car. Having Dunlop Winter Sport M3s installed. Decided to stick with 18" since I wanted to maintain look of car and sportiness since I live in an area with just average snow, and have SUV alternative. With the tires my car came with, the second set from the wheels I bought, plus the winter tires, I am good to go for awhile.
Good luck with your car! Where are you having these installed, dealer or some place else? I was thinking buy the rims from the local dealer, buy the tires from tire rack and then have the dealer do the install (although they will be the most expensive, but hopefully know what they are doing). |
...for OEM rims, check out this site: http://bmwwheels.com/bmwwheels_detai...123&Series=E60 ...you'll save almost $400 vs your dealer (they are a BMW dealer too) and no tax, just shipping which was less then the tax...i've just gotten my M184s thru them...then i got the tires thru tire rack and had a wheel place that i deal with mount the set....i was contemplating those Pirelli's but choose true snow tires as the traction will be so much greater with the real snow's vs the all seasons...another point to consider may be to get 18"s for the good weather and keep the 17"s for your winter tires, I know in NYC area (and LI) we have lots of icy conditions and thats where the true snows will pay off.... tire rack should also have places in your area that they deal with for the install that is much less than using your dealer
