I should mention that Semperit is now a Continental brand. I got these tires locally last year, cheap, for $128 each, and the ASA wheels coincidentally, were the same price, this year from Tire Rack. Tire pressure monitor recalibrated fine.

FYI, The 17" Bayern 5s (designed especially for BMW, supposedly) from Discount Tire Direct did NOT fit this car's calipers and were returned. I did not want the 18" (same style shown here). http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/f...-120&vid=008605

Go for 17". Dunlop M3 or the new model 3D (not yet offered in all sizes), they are high-performance winter tyre index H or V, if you get loads of snow (Finland or similar) get Nokian Rsi index up to 160 km/h but better on the icy stuff. NEVER EVEN CONSIDER RUNFLAT, they are the worst thing that happened to BMW after Bangle and Rover.

 

Did anyone with the asa's find that the rims bend easily? I have the Milli Miglia mm2's and I have bent every rim. (My summer stock rims are fine.)

17s will be better in deep snow. 18s will look better. I've got ASA 17 inch wheels with Dunlop M3 225-50-17 tires from tirerack and wheels look ok but they seat too deep inside the tire wall. That what you get when you replace 275 mm tire with 225 mm tire. If I could do it again I would go with 18-inch wheels.

id say go for the 18"s with your 550i, they'll probably be better all around, as long as you use good snow tires there shouldnt be a problem and you'll have the better handling kept inline like orig...here's what im running, they are the recommended winter set-up by BMW for the M5 & M6....

 

I live right in your area too and seriously thinking about upgrading my 17" OEM rims to the 18" Style 123s also and then installing the Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S tires on them to hold me off during the entire season (without having to switch out just for the winter). I belive in Ultra High Performance tires with decent snow traction (although still not as good as winter tires).

Where are you having these installed, dealer or some place else? I was thinking buy the rims from the local dealer, buy the tires from tire rack and then have the dealer do the install (although they will be the most expensive, but hopefully know what they are doing).

 

...for OEM rims, check out this site: http://bmwwheels.com/bmwwheels_detai...123&Series=E60 ...you'll save almost $400 vs your dealer (they are a BMW dealer too) and no tax, just shipping which was less then the tax...i've just gotten my M184s thru them...then i got the tires thru tire rack and had a wheel place that i deal with mount the set....i was contemplating those Pirelli's but choose true snow tires as the traction will be so much greater with the real snow's vs the all seasons...another point to consider may be to get 18"s for the good weather and keep the 17"s for your winter tires, I know in NYC area (and LI) we have lots of icy conditions and thats where the true snows will pay off.... tire rack should also have places in your area that they deal with for the install that is much less than using your dealer
