Due to be out of warranty and the car with 120k KM, i made the first service out of the dealer. The shop that made it, is the same that rebuilt my E46 M3 engine with pistons, rods, crankshaft... and the engine after 10K is still running like a rolex clock. The shop changed the engine oil to the new 10W-60 used in the 23d engines and the gearbox oil and filter. The engine is quieter, reach to normal operation temperature quicker (less wear during cold starts) and the gear changes improved alot. It is now so smooth and faster that it realy transformed the ride quality. The shop said that the gearbox oil was pretty bad and that it should be changed every 60K. Unfortunaly, BMW don't have it scheduled it their maintainance plan because it is better for them to replace the unit when it failures. This service isn't cheap because they put genuine BMW parts, but it worth every penny. Not only increase the reliable, but it gives a longer life of the components.

how often to change fuel filter?

As the fuel filter isn't such a expensive part and a dirty fuel filter decrease the performance, i have the habit to change it at every oil change (20K). But i know that there isn't any need to change it so sooner and that the usual is to change it at every 2nd oil change (40k).

Let me add the oil in the differential... Just a few EUR, but well spent!
