When I tried the below procedure nothing happened + the knob would not turn more than two turns. What's the trick. I tried this while the car was running.

wouldnt turn more than 2? duno what you mean lol.. the knob spins unlimited amount of times.. think your doing it wrong.

Start the car. Make sure your on the main screen. hold down the knob for 8 secounds. nothing will change on the screen. spin the knob as shown in th list of turns and push down.. worked first time for me

That's not true, the minute I hold the knob down from the main screen it takes me to the i menu and that is why you cannot spin the know more than 2 times. I held the know even longer than 8 sec the iDrive stated in the same screen no change.

like i said. after you hold the knob for 8 secounds nothing will change on the screen what so ever!

And theres nothing what so ever that phisicly stops you from turning the knob left and right.. so still.. dont understand why you think you cant.
