I was having a hell of a time trying to get the colored fillers on the rear bumper out so I could put in the reflectors so I climbed under the rear of the car and I notcied that there is a valve on one of the muffler tailpipes. I've got the same set up on my Corvette Z06. When the valves opens up it gets significantly louder. On the BMW I haven't noticed the exhaust getting any louder, just the associated engine noises getting louder when you nail the gas.
Is this a performance item? Can the valve be opened manually? Does it make any difference in the exhaust sound?

Andy545 you state that there is a sound difference - is it a more "racey" or performance sounding? Like if you kept the valve open you wouldn't want to get a performance sounding exhaust? Or does it make a droning sound at low rpms like the Vette at about 1800 rpm?
