Thumbs up

On my BMW 530i, I had complete dual stainless steel exhaust system installed with high flow cats and Borla xr-1 mufflers. I love the way it sounds at high rpm and outside the car but at 2k rpm out of that 6 cylinder engine it would produce such a droning sound that it would be unbearable for anyone in the car during (City Street Driving). Are there any suggestions to bringing down the sound?

My muffler guy says he will need to take out the xr-1s and put in aluminum mufflers. I don?t like having aluminum because it wouldn?t look right with the complete stainless steel that I had put in and paid for. He says there are no stainless steel mufflers that are about the size of the Borla XR-1s that would have chambers to eliminate the sound. Are there any other solutions to eliminating the droning sound?

Thanks for all the replies, is there a brand or a source where I can get good resignators that are small in size? The space under the car is limited?

-2 on the the resonators. It will not reduce your droning. Maybe be buy 2 db. You've changed the flow and exhaust pressure on the system, so the stock resonator or aftermarket may reduce the droning but will not be very noticeable.

It sounds like the issue is more on your borla xr-1. You may have too much freeflow on your exhaust system. Find out what design the alum. muffs are compared to your xr-1. If they are straight through, you are wasting time and money.

Previous to my current set-up, I had all resonators removed.
The result was unbearable after 30-45 minutes of driving.

Since then I've added a single resonator back in place.
This has significantly reduced the droning and loudness of the muffler.

At this point, I would think he has a couple of options:
  1. Retain his Borla XR-1 and add at least a single resonator.
  2. Replace Borla XR-1 with a different muffler. Unless he's considering something similar to an Eisenmann exhaust set-up, the result will still be loud and unbearable due to the lack of any additional resonators or mufflers to further reduce the sound. I've had the Eisenmann Race with 0 resonators and was very surprised at how much a single muffler such as that "muffles" or controls the sound from the engine.
Just a thought ...
