I had the following in my old car:
Rear:
19 x 9.5 ET45
Spacers - 12mm
Car handled like a dream, considering it was the same as Vladdy Daddy's.

I'm running 12mm spacers in rear too and no problems, handles well.

So, I've been doing some more reading on this subject and here's some more info - in case anyone else wants to do the same.
Rear track is already a full inch wider than front on the the e60. Widening the rear track is definitely going to increase oversteer, but will it impair the handling completely, as suggested before? Or will it simply be a little more balanced - stock handling balance tends to be slightly front-biased, i.e. light understeer. I'm thinking, to offset the dramatic widening of the rear track, I'll have to throw some spacers up front - maybe 12mm? Not too much if I eventually drop the car?

Just do it it's a minimal investment if you don't like it take them off. Spacers sell in like 2 seconds in classifieds. Don't overthink this one it's not that serious of a mod

Yes, thank you for your input. We've spoken about this before via PM, but I'm still not sure if there may have been other factors at play in your case. If you have a moment, please share more details on your experience.
1. What rims exactly did you have on? What were the offsets/rim widths front/back?
2. Could this have been an issue with overall rolling diameter? What were the exact tire sizes front and back?
3. Honestly, and please don't misunderstand my following question, but I'm not sure if you are possibly exaggerating the effects?
4. Finally, did you have alignment done after you put on the rear wheels?

I had Anzafins 8,5x17 ET20 with 225/50 tires (back) and at the front I had my 8,5x18 ET43 245/45.
I didn?t have any alignment done, since I only tested those wheels for 30 mins...
When I had all four wheels from RWD 525 (brand new car from the dealer) I didn?t have these issues.
But like the others already said this is quite easy for you to test with the spacers.
