not very electronically minded, anyone a little more tech savvy have any thoughts or opinions on this?
good alternative to not having to pay the dealer for coding to retrofit the ipod?

This doesn't seem like plug and play. Mainly due to the fact that it will display ipod into on the idrive screen. Also, you need to use a remote, which defeats the purpose when the E60's use Idrive's.
It is cheaper alternative, but not as great as the Dension Gateway 500.

This illustration shows that it hooks up to your stereo system's FM antenna.
That means it you will have to constantly have to flip through the available FM channels when you drive to a place that uses that frequency.
Same concept as the Harman Kardon Play + Drive ver 1 and 2.
I bought two of these, gave one to my dad. Still have the 2nd unit, boxed and unused.
If you're spending a few hundred bucks, just go with the OEM Ipod integration.

the dealership by me has told me that to retrofit ipod integration, it could cost me up to $500 and that they didn't know how long it'd actually take or whether it'd even work.
Despite what some say, BMW of Arlington has NOT been very helpful to me.

Yes, the dension / ipod will requiring programming.
But from BMW545's explanation, makes sense you dont need programming.
As for the dealership charging you that much.. that is a rip off. A real rip off. =/
