Depends on wheel, but almost in every case you would have to use quite thick spacers, because E90 wheels have much higher offsets than E60 wheels.

no they won't since the offset is too high. the e90 m3 would though.

So ifg i am understanding correctly, if they were installed they would stick out of the wheel well too much or too little?

E90 wheels would sit too in.

edit: ...and they would probably rub on the inner side.

too little. high offset means the wheels are too in and low offset means they come out more.

Would spacers make them work? Do you give up performace or handeling with big spacers?

sure they might work (make sure the wheel clears your brake caliper) but you'd need a pretty thick spacer 1cm-1.5cm and then need to purchase longer bolts to secure your wheels. i wouldn't do it personally nor would i recommend anyone else.
