What year model is your car?? I'm looking at doing a retrofit for my car and could sell you mine?? I'm in Australia. Mine has the Professional Navigation and I could get urs re-programmed as well.

You dont might have to buy new unit for your car.

It is easy to fix, just take it out, remove the player from the external casing, and increase/decrease laser gain as necessary. I do this to mine every so often.

Yep you can see it just next to the moving laser head, it is like a small switch which you can move to increase or decrease. This happens over time due to wear and tear and it will require multiple setting modifications until you find the optimal setting. My suggestion is to try playing a CD in it while it is still dismantled and only assemble it when the CD works. Also try moving the idrive know fast while playing a Cd and take note of the time it takes to switch between tracks. You know that the gain is correct if it switches between tracks very fast (1 second or less).
Electronics are funny that way..sometimes when you think they're broken and just leave them alone for a while they mysteriously work.

So i suggest to try increase/decrease laser. Or just let it be for a while. The dealer ofcource tells you to get new one because he's purpose is to sell stuff..

This happened on my boss' 3 series. He poked around some 3 series forums and found a source of just replacing the drive. It cost him about $150 and followed a DIY for taking the NAV system out. I'm sure it's the same issue on a 5 series.

I would look in eBay or at a junkyard. For an '04 it should be an easy swap out and possibly some recoding. If I were you if go that route, self install and hit a local shop for the coding. Take a look around on the forum at the retrofit posts...there are some how-tos listed. Definitely don't go the dealer route...you can get another unit on eBay for like $600...
