Hi
My 2004 545i is being rebuilt.. front end damage. Block was damaged at the bolt/threads.... Found a 4.8 X5 engine from a 2005. Can it fit into the 545i? What are the implications other than oil pan? Engine management system? Any clues?
I read that the 4.8 liter X5 and the 545i share the same ECU: DME / EK928_2
Can anyone confirm? This is a 10/2004 prod. date X5 4.8is engine.. and the 545i is a 2/2004 prod date. I read that the 4.8 is nothing more than a bored-out 4.5 and everything is pretty much the same?
Please confirm.. I rather drop this 4.8 than the one from the 745 that I also got. duh!! My original 545i engine has damaged threads holes on the block.. but is otherwise a 37k mi. engine...
.
Please let me know..
I will soon have a 745 engine with 22k miles for sale..

Good idea. But, I think you will need to be in close contact with BMW engineers to pull your plan off well.

Not sure if it'll help, but this guy dropped an M3 engine into a 323i. Maybe you'll find something useful in his thread or by contacting him...

Usually the SUV version of an engine is tuned differently than the car version of the same engine. This relates to torque and horse power curves.

My gut feel is you would run into other problems as you did the job.
I would contact your dealers field service engineer and start there. I would also do some looking into a 4.8l from a 550 - I am sure there is some poor shmuck that is going to total one.
Another option is to look into the RDS and Hamann 545 upgrades. I heard the Hamann is a whole new engine. Both are probably expensive though.
