Does anyone know if going to a larger rim and tire size from an 18 inch to a 19 inch effect the MPG very much? If so, about how much does it effect the MPG, 5%, 10%, 20%?

Thanks in advance.

I believe that if you keep the tire diameter the same as before, it does not matter the size of the wheel hence a nonfactor regarding MPG.

From Discount Tires:
It is important to note that although the wheel diameter is increasing, the overall diameter of the tire remains consistent.

I am going from four: 245-40-18 to a staggered set 245-35-19 front and 275-30-19 rear, and I just wondered how much will that effect my gas mileage?

Zero, b/c you have not change the overall tire diameter. It's going to consume gas the same as when you had the 18"s on.

I'm glad to see you are going with the staggered look. Your car is going to look awesome!

I'm with jiio here.

It's the tyre breadth that infects the MPG but also the tyre itself.

There are differanaces between tyres in the roll resistance and also
the tyre pressure makes a big differance.
More PSI more MPG.

I think that the change will affect the speedometer.
I went to a calculator site. Due to strange sizing issues, you may slow your speedometer. I always thought that going up a tire size diameter goes the other way, but the BMW 18" vs. 19" seems to create some strange results. When you believe that you are going 63 mph, you may only be going 60. If you lease your car, you may lose miles. I have heard two different versions of the story of whether the mileage counter acts independently of the sppedometer.
You should go to a website that does the tire/speedometer calculations to determine the exact changes. I was in disbelief of the numbers. If anyone can confirm my numbers (or tell me I am wrong), I would appreciate it.
I too am doing the same thing you are (except I am going to 19" 166s from 17"). The speedometer issues seems to be the only strange thing.
Thanks to all here for making me comfortable that I won't loose too much ride quality.

Exactly. I believe the width and resistance are the bigger factors.

Also, going to a larger rim may reduce the weight of the tire. I believe that rims are less weight than the rubber, so that can actually improve things by going from an 18 - 19 or 20.

A larger overall diameter may give you better highway mileage (kind of like being in a taller gear), but very minimal.

However, you probably will not be able to notice any of these factors except for the impact of the width and it is still going to be minimal.

So, bottom line is put on the tires/rims that you think look the best and give you the desired performance.

If your new rims are lighter, your mpg might actually go up...

I'm going to go against everyone and say your MPG will go up.

My justification is not because of any mechanical reason... You will just drive more aggresively...hence, increased MPG.
