As we all know, one of the most horrified things is when the ends of our doors get hit or scratched up. Well, while doing some searching BMW introduced a product designed by 3M which is Clear Protectant and is called BMW Edge Protection Foil Kit. It basically goes around the edge of the door so when someone opens it, it won't be scratched!! The part number is 51 91 0 410 829 and it's MSRP is $21.00. It's easy to do but requires patience. First, you must clean all edges of the doors that you will be covering, both inside and out. Second, you must measure out how much tape will be required to cover each door(A roll contains 13 feet, which is enough to do all 4 doors and also if you made a mistake). One tip, work in small sections, don't try to do the entire door and then go back and fix it, try to make it look as professional and follow the exact curve of the door. Third, cut where you want it to end. Finally, wrap it around the other side. Now some important tips on the last step. One, pull as tight as can. Two, try to avoid air bubbles! I had to undo 2 doors because of this. Three, have a good eye and a steady hand. This does take patience. It took me about 35 Minutes to do all 4 doors. Also make sure that you have a small chair to sit on because not being stable will affect the end result. I have posted some pictures both upclose and far away. From a distance you cannot even tell that it is on but upclose you can! Enjoy!! Any questions just ask!!

2 more Questions.
1. Is this 3M very think? eg. less than 1mm think.
2. Do you think this will show up on my silver car?

I just thort this is a very good mod if you have kids like me they alway never look and very fast at opening the doors.

Hmmm, local installers in my area have been doing this to all kinds of cars for at least five years... I had all doors treated on our Infiniti four years ago with 3M thing.

It's clear, so you won't see it until you are up close. Its about 1mm or a tad less. Its not like rock hard rubber stuff that you can use.

So I will go on Saturday and order my.

BTW is the part number is 51 91 0 410 829 and it's MSRP is $21.00 Kit for 4 doors or just 1 door?

Correct, the concept isn't new - its just clearbra. It just seems there is an "official" BMW part # now though.

You can have a professional detailer have clearbra installed however you want. For example...
- Owners in NYC put strips of clearbra on the rear bumper too to defend against parallel parking
- Exotic car owners put clearbra underneath their low cars to avoid scraping (instead of skid plates)
- I've heard a local Carrera GT that was entirely covered in clearbra, including roof, doors, etc.

If you're worried about door dings, you can have sheets or strips of clearbra put on the sides your doors.

Not bad, thanks for that.
Holland has narrow parking everywhere, might use this.
