My Ride: 2009 E61, 530 xD, CIC Professional, Dension GW500 SFOT (not working!)
Default

Sorry, a newbie to the world of E60/E61s and Densions, but as far as I can tell from extensive searching my problem is unique.

I recently bought a Dension GW500 (older single FOT model). Before doing so, I'd studied the Dension compatibility sheet, and assumed that all variants of E60/61 were included in the table, and as a result decided that I would have no problems.

What I missed was that my late-model E61 has what Dension describe as iDrive-4, so with CIC and Professional Nav, and that the Dension is not compatible. I've been in touch with their support team, and in short they are sympathetic, but there is no plan for them to do the research to produce a new firmware version to allow it to function. If I had a 3 series with CIC I'd be OK.

For more detail, I never use the CDC, so I simply swapped it out for the Dension. My copy of the instructions for the single-FOT only gives dip-switch settings for "BMW MP3" (1 & 2 ON, 3 & 4 OFF). When I did this, the car shows CDs in slots 5 and 6. Having selecting CD 5, an MP3 connected by USB to the GW500 starts to play, but there is no text, no way to control playback, and the system constantly shows a "waiting" message.

I downloaded the new instructions, which are for dual-FOT. The settings are all for 6 dip switches. There is an option for E60 without iDrive-4, and one for E90 with iDrive-4. The first 4 switches are shown to be set the same for E60 as in the old instructions for "BMW MP3". I decided to use the first 4 dip switch settings for E90 with iDrive-4 (1 OFF, 2 & 3 & 4 ON). The result is that no music is output, but CD5 now shows as "Aux GW", and CD6 is labelled "Menu".

So, close, but not close enough to be of any use!

Other than advising me to resell my GW500, does anyone have any idea how I can find a solution to this incompatibility? For example, is there a possibility to recode or reprogram the car so that the GW500 with firmware 2.22 will function correctly? Any advice will be gratefully accepted, but please try to keep it understandable for someone new to this tech!

OK, well it appears Ehssan had already posted the solution over here, late in 2011:-

Now I'll order a cable to follow his coding instructions, so hopefully all will be well in a week or two.
