It recognises the track names etc in the front slot but 'greys' out the CD # of the slot the MP3 CD is in when I put it in the CD Changer.

Does this mean my car isn't compatible with the denison Gateway 500? And if not, why not? Surely, having the up to date Progman version means my car is MP3 compatible or does the CD Changer part need a software upgrade of it's own?
Hi!
Let me explain things more detailed:

The Professional Radio (SA663 option I think) has the bigger, 8.8" screen and dual slot in the front. That is called CCC. If the MP3 capability is programmed you can play MP3 CDs in the front and also in the CDC, IF YOU HAVE AN MP3 CDC. So in your case the weakest point is the non MP3-CDC but it's not a problem, GW500 will take over those tasks most of the times.

What I talked about is the Business Radio (smaller screen, only one slot in the front, shared between audio and navi). This is called M-ASK. These E60 head units can handle MP3 CDs in the front but they cannot handle MP3 in CDC. (Not even with an original BMW MP3 CDC). You can use GW 500 only without text in this configuration.

The lower one is the optical diagnostic connector. You can use that, duplicate the optical connectors with the fiber optic cables found in the Gateway box.
But don't use that connector directly, this is for car diagnostic, not a CDC preparation.

One possible trap, on some cars, where there're no external modules on the optical ring (no phone/no TV/no CDC etc) it can be tricky, because the diagnostic port may not have a proper closing loop, just a cap to protect the connector from dust. Make sure that you have a closed optical ring after you install a device (e.g. Gateway 500) in a car like that.

GW500, so u say i should do something like this?

it seems like diagnostic port doesn't have closing loop now, just a cap to protect the connector from dust like u said, look here and here, you can even see the red optical light throught this plastic cap here.

No, you have to form a ring, not two branches.

Try something like this:
CAR -> DIAG connector -> Dension GW -> CAR

Ok, it's a proper closing loop! It has some light loss (what you see) but most of the light is transferred back to the ring.
(The protector cap is made from one material only and you don't see any light coming out from that.)

but if u say this optical connector is originaly ment for diagnostic, than where is cable for CDC? maybe i don't have cables prepared for CDC, in that case dension should be connected directly to MOST bus connector in the back of radio?
