I need to replace my windshield soon due to a crack. I have the HUD in my car, which I always have on and enjoy using. When I file a claim with my insurance, do I have to make sure they replace the windshield with special glass? Or can I have them use any glass and still be able to see the HUD?

A "Special" windshield is required; When you advise your insurance company be certain they note that in your claim. Whether you choose to have a BMW Service Center or a private installer will depend on your preference and what your insurance glass coverage pays. IMHO it's less about the glass itself and more about the experience of the place doing the installation that determines how it all works out.

I would highly recomend having your local BMW dealership install it! I would ONLY except a factory BMW windshield!! All of the after market ones rail light sensor delaminates from the glass over time.
