In some countries, people who want/can afford having a regular BMW, have to be *far* wealthier than what you would have to be in the US to buy an M5.

Modding smaller engined or older cars can make a LOT of financial sense in some countries. I.e. buy a cheaper low spec or older car to minimise the initial registration tax hit based upon car value, then mod it as best you can towards the car you really wanted in the first place -- and in my mind the people who go to those lengths, show true passion for cars
