Conversion Key kit?
New BMW 3 5 7 Serie x3 x5 E46 E38 E39 E60 E61 E53 E83 Remote Key Conversion Kit | eBay
Was looking at this but it says your current key needs to have the version with the separate transponder, how can I check this before I purchase?
I don't have a spare key but if you cut open the current key you can't piece it back together can you?

I had this conversion before, it's easy to do but mine fell apart after a few weeks, if this one is not flimsy like mine you'd be ok.
btw, mine did not have the separate chip and it worked fine.

Don't waste your time on this mod. You still end up with a flimsy looking key that is embarrassing if anyone ever picks it up. You'll only be fooling yourself and others that don't know cars. Any other BMW owner will be able to spot it's a fake, just by the look, feel and the weight.

I've been looking to get a new key anyway and this looks pretty... nice. I'm not doing it to make it look like I have a newer car. The BMW logo on my key is yellowed out, can't even see it and there is a lot of chips and scratches all over the plastic key case itself.

It turns out, it wasn't worth it. I still have mine unmolested. I'll sell it to you for 10 buck, plus cover shipping. if you really want to give it a go.

I'm in the same boat as you, my key is scratched and the center bmw logo is hazzy yellow/brown. I then saw this mod and bought one of the keys off of eBay, hoping this will be the fixed and getting an updated key.
