Default CIC + Combox + 6FL Retrofit on Late LCI

Relevant Car Info: 2009 LCI 535i. CCC with Navigation (Option 609), CIC iDrive Controller (since it's an '09), Bluetooth Calling (Option 639), AUX mounted behind center console.

Objective: CIC with Navigation, Combox for Wireless Bluetooth Audio & More Music Streaming Options (6FL)

CIC Parts List:
  • CIC Unit (Preferably from CIC Equipped E60 or E9x)
  • CID: CIC Display (Again, one from an E60 or E9x should work)
  • CCC-to-CIC Adapter Cable (Part # 61119185171)
  • Center Stack Trim Piece: Goes over CIC unit (Part # 51456976361)
  • Glovebox USB Socket (Part # 84109237656, 61319167196 )
  • Glovebox USB Trim Piece (Part # 51169166233)
  • Glovebox USB Cable (Part # 61129255716)
  • Adapter Socket Housing (Part # 61136954526)
Combox Parts List:
  • Combox (Preferably US_BN2000, or GPS_BN2000)
  • Combox Retrofit Harness (for TCU and MULF) [eBay]
  • MOST Loop (May be unnecessary)
USB/AUX (6FL) Parts List:
  • USB/AUX Port (Part # 61319138402 or 84109237653)
  • USB/AUX Trim Piece (Part # 51169136586)
  • USB/AUX Lead / Wiring Harness (Part # 61129187009)
  • BMW USB Connecting Cable (Part # 61119129360)
Coding High-Level Overview:
  • K + DCAN cable (OBD2 to USB ) [I bought one from Bimmer Geeks]
  • CIC Unit needs to be updated to latest software (C1A) via cloning a hard-drive or ICOM update (see Option #1 in THIS post)
  • Code everything to the car/VIN using help from THIS thread. Also, there are two videos on YT going over the CIC and Combox coding for E9x, which could be very useful. Check below
Installation:
  • CIC retrofit documented in the PDF attached named "BMW E60 CiC Retrofit" below & the video directly below
  • Combox retrofit documented in the videos below (Note: the harness I listed in the parts section is essentially the same as the one shown in these videos)
  • USB/AUX (6FL) not documented very well. See my post in M5Board for my plan of attack with that. Essentially, I will scavenge the current AUX cable to connect to the new USB/AUX port. Then, I will need to try to wire the USB from the center console to Combox in the trunk, which I have not found any information on. Wish me luck on that adventure!

As of now, I am still collecting all the parts. I will update this thread as I get deeper into the process. If anyone has advice, or thinks something in my plan is incorrect, please let me know! I am but a novice when it comes to all this electrical witchcraft. I've always hated dealing with wiring or anything electrical, but I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and learn, so here's to new challenges!

I have done a CIC swap, combox swap and 6FL swap personally (E61 and pre facelift but still)

CIC is straight forward if you use E60 parts as its then plug n play. Just update to C1A and use the coding style to get nav vs the emulator. You have a facelift already so the trim will fit what you already have.

combox you do not need an adapter harness. There are connector pin outs (online) and you can just swap the TCU/MULF pins from their connectors to the combox one (just get a cut harness from a donor car). even the coax cable can be plug n play(if not swap connectors). If your TCU or mulf are in different locations in the car that's when you might need the harness and a MOST plug. coding the combox can be tricky as the E60 won't read it; I just plugged it into one of my E90s(with combox) and just changed all the coding parts that say E90 over to E60 and it work. Any future coding Ill have to plug it back into the E90)

6FL I grabbed a cable from another E60, Ran it under the carpet in the back seats to the trunk. straight from the unit to the box and then coding. E90s with 6FL have a nice short adapter harness for the aux and its just the right length to plug into cars with the rear console aux and run it to the middle of the console.

Also if you have the arm rest vent, you will need a black plug to block the HVAC line when you replace the vent with the usb/aux.

Any questions just ask (I also have a spare E60 CIC retrofit sitting around, combox and some 6FL parts just shoot me a PM)

Thanks for all the info neilv, it's super helpful! Of course, I always have more questions than answers!

You have a facelift already so the trim will fit what you already have.
This is somewhat but not totally accurate. All CCC units still had a DVD slot for updating maps (below the CD slot), so if I reuse my current trim, there will be a hole where the DVD slot used to be.

combox you do not need an adapter harness.
For sure, I know THIS thread goes over adapting pins and such so you don't need an adapter. However, I think something like THIS will work & save me from making mistakes as I probably would with the method you're talking about.

coding the combox can be tricky as the E60 won't read it; I just plugged it into one of my E90s(with combox) and just changed all the coding parts that say E90 over to E60 and it work.
Apparently, some people work around this by loading the E9x SP-Daten files for 63 and A0 when updating the CIC to C1A. I read this on a forum somewhere, but can't recall the source now.

I also have a spare E60 CIC retrofit sitting around, combox and some 6FL parts
I'll send you a PM. Definitely interested especially if you could send me the CIC already updated to C1A.

My apologies by trim I meant the center console trim (for CIC controller) and the wood trim under the drive (nav version as the no nav has a cubby and wont fit the nav). The black dash trim yes you need the CIC version.

I find the Pinning the combox easier. 1 wire at a time; it saves money buying a harness plus no extra wiring bulk around.

I don't see how reloading the datens will work for the combox. Bmw never offered these together so no factory default will work. You have to manual go in the CIC coding and change it to combox as well as reading the combox on an E90

Default Combox Pt. 2

I've done some more (literal and metaphorical) digging. Turns out my car only has a TCU (not a MULF). This doesn't change much from my original post except I will need a specific harness adapter (TCU only to Combox) which I'll source from eBay. As has been discussed, I could start re-pinning stuff but I don't trust myself enough for that.

For illustrative purposes, below is a picture of all the ports on a GPS_BN2000 (Media and Telematics) Combox. Ports from left to right: FAKRA beige [type I] (bluetooth aerial), HSD jet black [type A] (USB1 for 6FL), HSD signal blue [type C] (USB2 for 6NF), FAKRA heather violet [type H] (GPS antenna), FAKRA black double connector (GSM + backup antenna).

My plan: white connector in car to beige combox port, 6FL retrofit connector in car to jet black connector (do NOT re-use black cable plugged into TCU for Combox). The remaining Combox ports will be left unconnected. *Important note: ALL connections on TCU are FAKRA*
