For reals? I saw this peviously, but for some reason thought it was a V8 thing only.
Hey Cal....yeah, so you should have it too! It takes less then 5 minutes. It is the grey looking filter on the top of the air box. I'll PM you as well. Do it! You will love it.

Now that a BMW tech corroborates the charcoal filter theory, I wonder if German delivery 545/550s have the charcoal filters as well. If they do NOT, I think that may explain the 8 hp difference in horsepower ratings between US (325) and German (333) spec 545s that I always wondered about... Just a thought.
Another note, there have been tests on M5Board showing proven gains of ~10rwhp from removing the charcoal filters from the E60 M5.

i popped my charcoal filter out with a flathead screw driver a couple months ago. No problems at all. Today i just dropped in the k&n filter!! Thinking about the rpi scoop. I read the k&n box and instructions and for highway driving it says the filter only needs to be cleaned at 50,000 miles. I also used a shop vac today and vac'd the air box. Lots a little rocks in their sitting at the bottom. Pretty easy and worth it. Got the k&n filter for like 52 dollars.

As Jeff said, that's the one. But it isn't friction welded on. There are actually a handful of metal clips connecting the back side of the charcoal filter
Mine definitely had friction welds and not a metal clip in sight. Looks like BMW changed the design sometime between 2005 and 2006 - probably part of that "don't let metal clips into the engine" philosophy .
A box cutting knife worked well to separate them.
