I read a thread about how removing the charcoal filter will give me a boost in horsepower and was really skeptical. I mean c'mon, people pay thousands of dollars for things that give them a modest boost and here was something that's free, takes like 5 minutes and is supposed to work. I thought about it but did nothing. Fast forward to last Saturday night. I was enjoying a lovely dinner with my family at Arthur's Tavern in Morris Plains, NJ. There was a chap sitting next to us with a BMW Technical Support Team logo polo shirt on and I struck up a conversation. Seems this gentleman travels around the country training BMW techs on the nuances of servicing our cars. After a few minutes I asked him his professional opinion on charcoal filter removal and if it really did anything to improve HP. He leaned back in his chair, smiled and said "you just found out about that?" Then he laughed. His wife even laughed. I laughed. My kids laughed. We all laughed. Hmmmm, it seems that the charcoal filter removal thing is real so the next day I tried it. For those of you who have 545s or 550s and are unsure, there is a HUGE difference in performance. When I nail the gas peddle the car literally leaps forward, pinning me in my seat. It also makes the coolest, most pissed off growl that I have ever heard while doing so. As for you, my E60.net friends, I am sorry that I ever doubted you.

ha, i got the visual of everyone laughing at you, of course it was exaggerated in my mind, with your family pointing and laughing, you looking nervous and embarrassed, sweat dripping from your head.

Interesting ... never had this issue. I've had mine off for quite some time now.
And she's been in the dealer for service several times since the removal.

no charcoal filter in the 535i, so technically you already removed it , the boys in germany took care of it for you

negative on the cold air intake, proven to lose power even with the n54 turbo engine...just stick with a stock box and drop in filter..and a scoop...check the sig...definitely get the jb3 ...new v 1.3 to be released soon is pushing out some great numbers (check e90posts or n54tech for more info)

RPI is also testing the n54 powerchip tune as well I think....

the BMS DCI has also been known to throw codes as well....
