I spoke with my dealer the other day about swapping out ring and pinions, dinan rear diff and other options. I also did some parts research and this is how things are summarized at the moment.

BMW says that they do not swap ring and pinion gears. They swap out the entire diff as a single unit, everything but the cover and the fluid. The gears in a 550i Step are 3.38 compared to manual 2.93. The driveshaft on the Step is 2mm shorter than the manual/SMG, but Tech said they could make it work. The problem is, I was told if anything ever went wrong with the drive train the first thing they will try to do is point at the incorrect diff in the car as the culprit. Even though it is a BMW part installed by BMW techs. He indicated the safe way was the Dinan, but the difference in diff cost is $500 versus BMW diff. I was told no warranty issues with Dinan diff, funny huh, aftermarket trumps OEM.

I too want shorter gears in my manual 550i and it will be the first major mod I undertake. He also told me that the dealership may be having a Dinan day soon where they will discount parts/labor. I think I will wait and see.

I will check into the RD Sports ring and pinion gears to see how feasible the swap is. Vegas, keep us informed of your pioneering progress.

The shop where I'm having it done has switched out the stock ring and pinions of the e46 M3 for 4.1 gears without swapping out the diff. In taking heezy545i's advice into consideration I'm think about not going with the 4.1 gears. Maybe a 3.91 or 3.73?

Yeah, I guess most of the racing is done off-the-line and in lower gears....can't wait to see the mod when it happens! VT you should be the one going for the full R54 conversion!

R54 conversion is waaaayyyyy tooo much >$20K.

For my taste, a 3.64-3.73 ratio would be perfect. Let me know about the ring and pinion swap. That is what i am used to in other cars. Much cheaper than swapping out the entire diff.

make it happen and report back

If you're staying NA, I'd go with the 3.91 or 4.10s. If you're going to get the supercharger in the future, then I'd consider something like the 3.38 from the step.

I'll go with 3.73 and LSD. I'm going to talk with Darwin Thursday morning. Find out if he has heard back from Frederico of RDSport yet.

Vegas, can you ask to Dinan and RD if with a lightened flywheel shifting time will be reduced, like Dinan declares ?

"SMG equipped cars receive the added benefit of a reduction in shifting time, which results in smoother gear changes in both the manual and "automatic" modes."

Alex,
Can't help you out with Dinan but I can certainly find out with RDSport. I'm heading over to CarLab today for some mods. I'll ask Darwin to ask Frederico about the lightweight flywheel.

VT, any news on the swap?
Do you know if there's anything available for a 525i manual?
I got Darwin did my suspension install and he's a cool guy =)
Also, what kind of $ are we talking about for this mod?

vegastrashed 06-05-2007 01:41 PM

No update yet. I need to press Darwin on this mod. Will call him soon to remind him.
