Hey guys watch out for the new crime wave sweeping across america.Just brought my wife a used 2002 BMW X5 for Christmas, and about two days ago some DUMBASS cut the catalylic converter off.Insuarance com wont't cover the lost, and BMW wanted $1400 to install new. This blows big time, come to find out the converter has platinum, and rhodium in them.Scrap yards here in Chicago are getting are $1700 an ounce for platinum, and around $5900 an ounce for rhodium, while the crackheads stealing them are only getting $50-$100 a pop for them.Must of used an battery-powered saw, cause it's like -5 outside .

This is the strangest theft I?ve herd about.
Here in Sweden they steal airbags and headlighs. But to cut away the cats is not heard of (yet).

Well look at it this way for $1400 you might as well go aftermarket (there are some nice aftermarket exhaust systems for X5) and now you have a good excuse.

where are the cats located on the V8's? cuz on the I6's it would be near impossible to steal cuz they are basically part of the headers right beside the engine.

There has been a spate of cat thefts here in the UK where I live, easy money, easy BIG money, they could combat this by simply reducing the cost of them to buy IMHO if they really wanted to.

I guess I'm a little surprised that the insurance company wouldn't cover it. To me, it seems the same as if someone stole your wheels from your car. Typically, they will cover wheels, why not the converter?

Yeah, better to heve something that is easy to steal stolen than costly mecanical/engine parts.
Better to claim that they took the radio antenna together with the cat.

Shou?d be a black list world wide to protect us against this kind of insuranse companies.
