Does anyone make a catback for the e60?
Replacing just the muffler will give the aggressive sound most are looking for, but replacing the midpipes from the catalytic converter back, will allow the air to flow more freely. The overall loudness and drone of the exhaust should be increased along with a slight change in tone.
I wouldn't expect a noticeable performance gain either way.

As far as I know, Remus doesn't have a cat back exhaust for the E60. I researched them before I decided on the Dinan exhaust. There are several members here with Remus (JDN and jet190rs to name a couple) so they can comment on the sound of their set up. I think JDN has sound clips in his signature.

The only catback exhaust available for the E60 is the RDSport (Racing Dynamics) Power Exhaust. Note in the pic, that this exhaust is not only catback, but also includes headers and cats.
Catback simply means everything behind the cats are replaced (resonators and muffler). All other brands are just the muffler, not catback, so they don't replace the resonators.
If you really want catback but don't like RDSport (since it goes beyond catback and is $$$), get one of the other brands' mufflers and replace your resonators with straight pipes. I think you can also buy pieces of the RDSport a la carte, such as only the muffler and x pipe.
If you do replace all the resonators (or go RDSport catback), the sound will be even louder. It may be also cause resonance and vibrations, and may be too loud/obnoxious for some owners.
Here's my thoughts on my Remus -

For 1k I would hope I can feel a performance gain in a catback

We all know most mufflers (for our E60s at least) don't improve performance.
Resonators (called front silencers in Europe) do nothing but cancel sound. Replacing them usually doesn't gain hp.
I'm not saying its impossible to get more hp. I just wouldn't expect it.
Going beyond the catback and replacing the cats and headers (like the RDSport) would be your best bet if you want more performance.

Cat back is still going to restrict flow. Headers and cat are not changed. You'll get more sound but I doubt you'll see any real improvement at the rear wheels. But it might make you "feel" like it's doing something.

I believe most exhaust systems do increase power but it's so minimal that it's not noticeable. Besides for the sporty sound, most mufflers should improve exhaust flow slightly and should also weight less than the factory system so in my opinion, there's a general overall benefit to getting an aftermarket exhaust.
With regards to the RD Sport system, you can order just the Quad Exhaust conversion with the X-pipe which are both, placed after the cats. Like jet190rs said, it's pricy. Carrozzeria Designs in CA quoted me $3,540 for both ($2,660 quad exhaust and $880 for the X-pipe). The cats are another $3,550 and the Competition Header set is $3,855. About $11K for the complete system. Might as well get a VF Engineering supercharger.
