as the title says can the idrive display ipod videos? from a video ipod?

Yes, but you need a few bits to make it work:

Dension Icelink Gateway 500 installed with the video out module
BMW ACM Module or Nav2Go TV module. I'm not sure if you have TV enabled from the factory if it gives you a video in.

Plug the video output from the Dension into a spare input on the TV module and off you go.

i cannot install nav pro in my E60 because i have no nav prep ... you think i can install and aftermarket nav to hook into the acm or dension video so i can have nav on my idrive?

I researched this quite a bit when I was considering doing something similar. I could not find any general satnav systems which had a video-output unfortunately. The only option I came up with was to have a full in-car computer. I did this in a previous car and it worked ok, and if done properly would be really good hooked in to the iDrive screen, but I ended up getting a new E60 with inbuilt nav. It would end up being a fairly complex and expensive project - if you are good with electronics then it would be fun - but if not, there is no easy aftermarket plug nav solution (excluding of course standard window mount tomtom/garmin/etc).
