As for them degrading the quality of your brakes, this just isn't the case. I saw them before my dad put them on. They are basically thin plastic vented frisbees. Very thin plastic. I wouldn't think they could damage your brakes at all. They just act as a thin shield. They don't hinder the brakes in any way.
I'm going to keep wiping/washing just because they LOOK better with the disc brakes showing.

I tried the swiffer -- the one that has the long stick (dont know how to describe it)--, on my wheels after 3 weeks without cleaning them and about 400 miles from the last time I cleaned them.
Boy that thing works great. I think the best way to use it is:
first clean your wheels with the wiffer..then if you want to have perfect wheels wash them with regular soap.
They did magic and it only took me like 15 or less to clean them.
I still dont believe it. --

Ive had 4 BMWs in the past, and all of them made a lot of brake dust. For the past year Ive been using Wheel Wax on my older E46 M3 and now my E60. I have found it to be the most helpful to CUT DOWN on brake dust.. But it will not eliminate it. I apply the Wheel Wax every 2 months, once. It really has helped decrease the amount of brake dust and it also makes it so much easier to spray off any brake dust with water instead of using any acid degreasers. It causes the brake dust not to stick deeply onto the rims.

I own a 2004 530i and I got real tired of daily cleaning wheels because of the excessive brake dust the E60 produces! I got the same answer you did, "that I should not change the brake pads it could void your BMW brake system warranty.
Well, I went to the net a found a solution call the "Kleen Wheels" Dust Shields for: for 71.50 + 50.00 = $121.50 for installation and lifetime warranty of tire rotation and balancing!
In conclusion: I miss seeing my brake rotors, but I do not miss apologizing to my friends about my excessive brake dust! The new improved Vented "Kleen wheels" brake shields solved my problem and so far has not voided my BMW warranty when my dealer saw them! IN fact they liked them so well, the ask me for the website for the Kleen wheels for their other BMW customers who complain about the excessive brake dust issue!
You might want to check with you local BMW dealer to make sure your Brake warranty will not be voiding by your BMW service manager. (Once you show them www Kleen Wheels Literature and explain to them the Kleen Wheels brake shields being used by other E60 owners, I do not think they will give you a problem. My Kleen Wheels have been professionally installed since April 2004 and my brake are still excellent).
I wish you the best in which way you decide to go Kleen Wheels Vs, Excessive Brake dust Vs A third party non warranty brake pads Vs. Cleaning, waxing and cleaning... waxing ...almost daily cleanings which gets old fast...

I just bought some Wheel Wax. It's supposed to clean and help repel brake dust. I'll let you guys know. www.wheelwax.com
