This whole subject just cracks me up. Everyone just wants to mod (Modify).

If you car comes with black inserts, people want reflectors or painted inserts.

Most people do not like the chrome trim and prefer the shadow line (standard with Sport pkg). BUT, people are now buying Chrome grills because the grills are black/shadowline. Hilarious. If Chrome was standard, people would be buying the black ones. You know they would!

IMO, red reflectors don't look "better". Black or painted look great. I think the reflectors look a little silly.

Can't totally disagree with you 555, but the issue is not that people want to mod, BMW designed the slots in the bumper for the reflector. For what ever crazy reason, the US DOT thinks that the reflectors are a problem, so BMW fills the hole with a cheap piece of black plastic. That is the problem! What BMW should have done was to design a filler to match the paint color that would be flush with the bumper, like the plug we all have for the tie down on each bumper (see Jimbo's upclose photo). That would have solved the issue and we wouldn't be having this debate. On the darker color, I agree, its much less of an issue, but on the silvers and white, the cheap black plastic looks a bit silly. IMHO

I agree in some ways, especially about the bumper in the U.S. But the whole chrome grill thing cracks me up. So many people have removed the chrome trim for the shadow line! I guarantee you people would be buying black grills if their car came with chrome grills. Just to mod...

Red plastic reflectors don't look "better" on the dark color cars (IMO). I think even the black inserts look better in those situations, especially if your car is black. In Jimbo's example above, the painted look looks awesome (IMO). But so many people in the U.S. just had to have those red reflectors!

I know it's all very subjective, but a very prevailing thought is to get something you don't already have to make it "better". And in so many cases, it was "better" before the mod. Again, not in Jimbo's case though. Looks great.

I didn't really care for the red reflector inserts so I had the black ones painted to match my ride.

To me they look fine.

I like them! But I also like the red reflectors, but I hated the flat black ones that came on my 530i, they looked cheap!

PS,

I might get mine painted! (Mine is T. Silver also) way to go, you might have started a new e60 BMW trend!

My Ride: 2005 545i SMG. Titanium Grey with Grey interior and Anthracite wood.

My first 2005 545i had black inserts on Titanium Silver. I replaced these with red reflectors. My 2nd 2005 545 had painted inserts on Titanium Grey.

When I see cars and their are lines, vents or in this case, the hole for the red reflector, it looks wrong to have a painted or back insert. Like the M5, if BMW didn't want something there, they wouldn't have purposely left a hole in the bumpoer. I kept my reflectors from my first car and installed them with in 2 hours of having my new car. I like the look rather than 1/2 a$$ing it.
