A lot states in the US does not allow the front windows to be tinted.
Cop can issue you a ticket, and it will not pass the annual inspection.

I think Flowerfred was refering to the front door window, not the windshield/windscreen. I don't know of any state in the U.S. that allows the front windshield to be tinted. From looking at some of the pictures posted, it seems to be more common in Europe to just tint the rear door windows but not the front door windows. Different stroke for different folks...

Hi,

I mean the slightly tinted "sun protection glass" which could be added as an option when ordering your car. I do not want to tint the windows with film.

I'm pretty sure FlowerFred has the Individual "factory tint" looks like the glass over the third brake light is tinted as well (tell me if I'm wrong). I regret not getting this pretty cheap option. It's good to know that the tint is in the glass and it won't be scratched by luggage or dogs.

I'm planning to get my windows tinted, how sensitive is the film for scratches? The company I talked to are using a metal coated film called Omega. And I'm thinking of 15% light thru.

Anyone heard of the Omega film? Anyone know how much light the BMW privacy glass lets thru?

At least in Germany it is illegal to tint the windscreen and/or the front door windows.
You are only allowed to have tinted rear windows.

This rule is valid all over EU. In fact, being an harmonized european rule, it has been introduced in Italy, also, where to tint ANY windows was previously forbidden.

The rule is quite simple:
-the driver must have unreduced visibility for 180?, looking forward.
-the film used must be certified and approved by any european automotive regulation body
-glare or mirror like treatment, being potentially dangerous for other drivers, are not allowed

Most car makers are now offering, especially on SUV, SAV, RV and station wagons OEM "tinted" windows, only in rear section of the cabin, of course. AFAIK, only BMW offers it as an option for his sedans.

In Italy it is a very risky affair to tint the windscreen and/or front windows; if the police catch you, not only you get a fine but, much more critical, they will keep your car's documents and you get them back only after a full Ministry of Transport inspection proving that you've restored the original conditions.
