Thumbs up

Hi Folks,

I did a search on "battery charger" but didn't find the info I was looking for. I was wondering if any of you use the <$100 BMW Battery Tender/Charger solution?

Clips (the black and red connectors) appear to be non-existent now. Basically, you plug one end into your cigarrette lighter and the other end into an outlet.

Suppose to have internal electronics that won't overcharge your battery, but preserves the battery when you don't drive the car every day.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,
-CoolTones

With all the electronics in the E60 I woulndt want to try... the car will be fine parked a few days... just drive it for a little long when you do move it at a greater speed for a while...

Definitely, yes. My battery tender works very well, although I seldomly need to use it since I'm not often gone for more than two weeks. I used to use it especially on a stored car.

Yes, I used it when I was away for 3 weeks last summer and the car was fine. I bought the cig lighter to battery prong adapter from radio shack and connected it directly to the battery leads in the engine bay though. I read before that the cig lighter socket's won't charge the batter once the car has "gone to sleep" ie. after the 20 or so minute off period.

I picked up a charger at the local auto supply store for about USD 30. It puts a constant light load on the battery and then runs it through a charging cycle when the charge falls below a certain threshold. The nice thing about it is that there is a quick disconnect on the charging cable (and eyelets to the battery) which allows me to disconnect and drive very easily.

I haven't tried it on the E60, but it did a fine job on my old E36 M3 and is now keeping the battery on the Vespa topped off.

I use it since some years. It?s a showroom charger and there?re adaptors for directly charging by the connectors in the engine room.
Works realy fine, in germany prizing is about 160 Euro.
It also repairs the battery for short-distance drivers like me. Since having this charger I?ve no problems with battery.

One thing about: you cannot connect it to the cigarette lighter the e60 power modul doesen?t allow back-powering. The charger shows "error" but it doesen?t harm the e60.

Connecting directly to + and - in the engine room works fine.

Edit: will take a pic next time in garage and post it.

A bunch of great feedback.
Thanks guys!

From what some of you said this may explain why connecting directly to the cigarette lighter did *not* seem to allow me to charge the battery.

Cheers,

there is a note in the wds info about charging via cigarette lighter DO NOT USE...as the pdc cicuitry and other back emf issues can cause problems use the under bonnet connection point on the e60.

Maybe with this aux power adapter charging is possible. I?ll check that later.
