you can buy high temp matte black engine spray paint that works very well, the process takes an hour or so because you need to clean and heat up the exhaust and spray on two coats and let it dry in between the coats

the results exactly the same in regards to looks as powdercoating and will last a long time

its a really good route to go
Cool, thanks for the info. Since I'm not sanding down the chrome, I've got nothing to lose really. IF for some reason it did happen to flake, I could always just strip it down to chrome again. An hour and an $8 can of high temp spray paint. Why not!

Much appreciated PTL!

i would suggest getting the expensive high temp paint, IIRC the can was like $30 but lasted over five years with no flaking and no dulling on the exhaust

OK, so the DIY would be:

1. Buy $30 high quality high temp paint, mask bumper
2. Clean chrome tips with rubbing alcohol
3. Start the car and let the exhast tips get hot
4. Turn off car and spray the tips while hot
5. Wait for cool down - 30-40 mins? or whatever
6. Repeat steps 3 & 4

Did I miss anything?

The tips need to be pretty hot, if you have a torch and set it on low that will work best.

Starting the car method will work but you need to add 3-4 coats for that

but yeah you got the process right there

I would give an hour inbetween coats

ObD Suggested these:

part # 18107500498 - Exhaust pipe extension SCHWARZ, 4.4 L E53 with sport package

I need to make sure they'll fit though since he's got at 535 and mine's a 530.

It fits a pipe ~ 2.5 in diameter. If your pipe is 2.5" you are golden. Will not fit a diesel since they have that sexy big oval.

I have two round ones in my 530d. I'll have to measure them!

edit: I think the newer 520d and maybe 525d have the big oval tip.
